The University at Buffalo recognizes that in any large and complex
organization, workplace and interpersonal conflicts will arise. Often
these issues and disagreements cannot be resolved through established
grievance and complaint processes. Workplace conflicts can cause
stress, damage morale and diminish a department’s productivity,
diverting a work unit from its mission. In order to provide an avenue
for individuals to work together to examine and resolve conflicts, the
University has established a one-year pilot Conflict
Resolution/Mediation Program. The purpose of this program is to
encourage the early resolution of workplace conflicts through
alternative dispute resolution options.
Members of the University community can use the Conflict
Resolution/Mediation Program when mediation or facilitation would be
appropriate to resolve an issue. The program is a joint initiative
between the Center for Resolution and Justice and the University at
Buffalo. Services are confidential, free, impartial and voluntary. The
program structure features a co-mediation model consisting of trained
and experienced mediators from the Center for Resolution and Justice (CRJ)
and the University at Buffalo. When issues involve a large group or an
entire work unit, facilitation services may be appropriate to identify
problems and to develop a group consensus. Facilitation services will
also be provided by trained CRJ and UB professionals.
This program was developed through the collaborative efforts of the
following offices, which will serve as points of referral for the
program: the Employee Assistance Program (EAP) office, the Employee Relations office,
the Equity Diversity, and Inclusion office (EDI), and campus
unions. Referrals to the program will be coordinated by the EDI
office.
